Natural Drain Cleaner

Drain cleaning is an unfortunate necessity, and its important cannot be understated. Homeowners and businesses often wait until a problem occurs before they take action to improve the integrity of their plumbing system, but with a few pre-emptive measures you can decrease the likelihood that issues such as blocked drains will occur.

Our premium drain cleaning servicing is great for big jobs, emergencies, and preventative maintenance, but with these natural drain cleaner recipes you can keep your system in good health safely and inexpensively. Chemical drain cleaners, such as those you might buy from a supermarket or hardware store, are tempting short-term solutions to a blocked drain. But you need to be aware that they cause damage to your plumbing due to the corrosive nature of the chemicals used in such products. Natural drain cleaners are the best, and are much cheaper than the corrosive alternatives!

Ingredients for an effective DIY natural drain cleaner

-Salt
-White vinegar
-Baking Soda

Method

To make your own natural and safe drain cleaner, you should start by collecting the above ingredients. Once you’ve got them ready, bring about three litres of water to a gentle boil and add half a cup of salt. Pour this down your drains first, as it can often be enough to minimise the growth of biofilm and wash away any minor blockages in your pipes.
For more stubborn blocked drains and pipes, pour down the hot water and salt mixture first and let that sit for 15 minutes. Then pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of vinegar or lemon juice. Put some sort of cover over the drain, and allow it to sit for a while. The chemical reaction caused by the baking soda and acid will foam up and dislodge blockages. After you have let it sit for a while, flush a few more litres of hot water through the pipes to remove any residue.
This is a perfect way to clean your pipes, whether as part of a general upkeep strategy or to clear minor blockages. If you have tried to clear a blockage with this recipe but had no success, call us so we can help with our professional tools and experience.
IMPORTANT: You must be careful never to pour vinegar down a drain if you have already poured a store-bought chemical drain cleaner, as the two will react and release noxious fumes and potentially damage your plumbing.

The ingredients you use to clean your drains are also useful for making a general cleaning solution which you can use to clean your fixtures, surfaces, and almost anything else.
Get a spray bottle and fill it about two-thirds full with water. Add ¼ cup of baking soda and top it up with lemon juice or vinegar. This is more than adequate for household cleaning.
If you want to clean windows or mirrors, try making another solution which doesn’t have the baking soda. Lemon juice and water alone make an excellent mirror or glass cleaning solution which is cheap and safe.
