Burst pipes and leaks

A burst or broken pipe is one of the greatest domestic inconveniences a homeowner can face. Damaged pipes can stop plumbing all over the house from working properly, and if not treated promptly, can result in extensive damage to the infrastructure of your home. Additionally, burst pipes waste an enormous amount of water; as much as 400 litres an hour. This means that you could lose up to 9,600 litres over the course of a day, which is the equivalent of about 50 bath tubs full of water.

In colder climates, pipes burst much more frequently due to exposure to freezing temperatures which can cause the liquid in the pipe to expand. Here in Australia, we are lucky in the sense that freezing temperatures are rare, but be aware that this could cause damage to your home’s plumbing system, especially in unprotected areas or older homes.

Pipes can break over time due to age or damage, which is why it is important to only use your home’s plumbing for what it’s designed to do. Encroaching tree roots or foreign objects washed into drains during storms can also damage pipes, causing them to break.
